Bloke was forced into his kitchen by two blokes one armed with a screwdriver and fought back. Looks like fair play to me. He is 78 for fucks sake.

Shouldn't be charged if that's what happened.
It's not his fault a pair of lowlifes broke into his house in the middle of the night. He was only defending himself and his house- what's he supposed to do? Let them possibly stab him as well as rob him?
I say the intruders deserved whatever they got, and it's a terrible state of affairs where the victim can become the accused- especially at his age.

He'll probably get away with it. Don't you HAVE to be arrested on suspicion of murder in a situation like this? There's a person dead by your hands - don't they investigate and then find there's no case to answer or something?

Sure he will get off but you cant expect the old bill not to arrest someone who's killed someone else, whatever the circumstances.

Few years back someone sent me a video of a incident (think it was either South Africa or the US) where 2 blokes broke into a warehouse only to find 2 big fuck off gnarly pitbull's in the building... was not much left of the 2 blokes faces that's for sure... fair game for me...

This country is so fucked up that it's truly depressing.
A 78 year old is disturbed in the middle of the night in his own home by two intruders and arms himself to fight them off. In the ensuing struggle one of them dies from a knife wound.
That is known as self defence - not fucking murder.
The clueless police should not even be questioning this man as none of this would have happened if the two scrouts had not broken into this brave mans home.
If our clueless Home Secretary had an ounce of sense she'd tell plod to release him immediately.

Local ward Councillor Mark Ingleby described the killing as a "tragedy" and said it had come "out of the blue".
No it's not a tragedy, the cunt got more than he bargained for and died. If he hadn't broken into someone elses house he would be alive now.
The tragedy is the homeowner being arrested on suspicion of murder, that's a tragedy.
If they had not been in his house without invitation they both would be alive.

When was the last conviction for murder, of a householder using lethal force, to defend himself inside his own house?
Quite right that due process is followed when lethal force used by citizens, police etc.
